Tourism

Tourist Commission

The Shepherdsville/Bullitt County Tourist and Convention Commission was created to market Bullitt County to visitors who travel I-65 heading to southern destinations and to visitors seeking to visit the Kentucky Derby Region attractions to generate revenue for the local economy.

HISTORY

In 1987, Bullitt County Fiscal Court established the Bullitt County Tourist Commission pursuant to KRS 91A.350.  They passed a three percent (3%) transient room tax to fund the operations of the Commission.  Realizing I-65 carried a stream of money that could increase revenue for local businesses and employ citizens.  Fiscal Court wanted the Commission to strenghten the tourism industry and to provide a diverse economy.

In 1994, the Commission engaged a consultant to see if there was a need for a convention center in Bullitt County.  A convention center would be a tourism tool to expose more people to Bullitt County assets, keep needed money in the county from citizens seeking meeting services outside the county, and create room nights and restaurant business.  In 1997, Shepherdsville passed a two percent (2%) restaurant tax to pay for a building that would become the Paraquet Springs Conference Centre'.  The Shpherdsville/Bullitt County Tourist and Convention Commission was jointly established for the Commission to operate tourism promotion for the county and operation of the Paraquet Springs Conference Centre' in Shepherdsville at exit 117 off I-65.  The Centre' was established to bring groups to stay overnight, patronize our shops and restaurants and visit the attractions in our county.

As a result of these efforts, the tourism industry attracts over 88 million dollars annually from the traveling public to circulate in our local economy and provides of 1600 full-time jobs.  We currently have over 50 eating establishments, 13 hotels with over 1,000 rooms, and two of the top ten tourisht attractions in the region with Jim Beam American Outpost and Bernheim Forest.

Since its inception, the Shepherdsville/Bullitt County Tourist Commission's primary goal has been to enhance the county's economy through tourism development - to promote and sell Bullitt County and entice travelers to visit te variety of attractions offered.
